Spring Boutique

The men and woman in blue (the team comprised of Daniel, Mary-Aude, Josh, Sylvain and Fabrice) were mightily outnumbered last night as their new épicerie was stormed by a mob of gourmands with a nose for free wine and snacks.
For the lucky/sturdy souls who managed to battle through the bloggers, there were winemakers (Catherine Breton, [...]

The KGB Guide to Food Media Coverage

Have you ever wondered why some restaurant openings are “events” while others are simply overlooked? The recent opening of Ze Kitchen Galerie Bis provides some clues about media coverage and what it takes to draw the hounds.
#1: Give us a name we can play with. No, I don’t mean this restaurant’s full name, which is [...]

Art Home in pictures

As I recently mentioned over at Saveur, a new restaurant called Nomiya has just been dropped—by crane—onto the roof of the Palais du Tokyo, a contemporary art museum in the Trocadéro district of Paris. Click here to read the full post, and then visit David Lebovitz to read his take on trendy dining in the [...]

Rosalito: proceed with caution

This week brought the opening of Rosalito, a tapas bar that (on paper/screen) has everything going for it:

Foodie pedigree (same owner as Da Rosa)
Sweet location (near République and the Canal)
Sidewalk terrace
Sangria

I tried it out on Friday night with a pack of hungry and curious friends. But before revealing anything more, I need your opinion:

poll [...]

L’Arpège: I think I get it

“If you ‘get it’, it will move you…” So said a fellow food blogger in the hours before my visit to l’Arpège.
I am dumb, five hours after setting down the fork, with neither appetite nor words. But I do think, just maybe, that I get it.
I’ll update this later with annotations and some thoughts about the [...]

The roofs is on fire

Beginning tonight, the super value Mama Shelter hotel will begin hosting weekend BBQs up on the roof. Their €39 menu is a bit pricey (dinner for two will cost more than your room) and offers ni hot dog, ni hamburgeur. Nevertheless, I’ll be checking it out… next week. After all the hub-bub has died down.
The [...]

Two hot dishes from Racines

Hot Dish #1: Pierre Jancou

Hot Dish #2: Pierre’s Agneau de Lait en Cocotte
The latest issue of Gulf Life, the in-flight magazine for Gulf Air, has a new interview with Pierre Jancou. The charismatic owner of Racines was kind enough to share (along with his time and some tasty natural wine) this recipe for milk-fed lamb with [...]

Le Chateaubriand

Years ago, I tried le Chateaubriand and had an okay – nothing more – meal. I was later shocked to read reviews heralding this as one of the best restaurants in the city. Edgy, inventive, and over-the-top delicious – none of the adjectives matched my own experience there.
I eventually figured out that Inaki Aizpitarte, the [...]

Rolling with the homies

As promised, Daniel Rose hosted an indoor picnic de luxe last Saturday at Spring restaurant in the 9th. On the menu: lobster rolls, duck-fat french fries (a nod to Hot Doug?) and some very cold champagne.
We arrive late (quelle surprise) after a noisy afternoon at the Villette Sonique music festival. Walking in around 9pm, we’re [...]

Daniel Rose and the return of Spring

A few months ago, I interviewed Daniel Rose for United’s Hemispheres magazine. During the two hours we spent together, his phone rang about 47 times. It wasn’t a good thing, he explained, because those callers wanted… a reservation. Rather than pick up and tell the would-be suiters that Spring was booked four months in advance, [...]
